A Playful God?

My friend and fellow blogger, Jean Wise on Google+ shared a column at Healthy Spirituality called Playing with God. I connected with the title if not the content.  You don’t normally think of “playing with God.  At least I don’t.  That’s not the image I have of HIM.  Typically I see God as serious, as no nonsense, as severe.  I think that’s only because it’s how I’ve always seen HIM.  It’s how I was brought up.  It’s how I was trained to view HIM.

If it is true, however that God made us in his image then we are only doing HIM a disservice if we don’t see all sides of our personality in HIM.

–We have a sense of humor.
Why shouldn’t he?

–We play games.
Why shouldn’t he?

If we carry on a daily conversation with HIM why shouldn’t we also have fun with HIM?

The stories of God as a vengeful deity , one who uses punishment to get what he wants from us are simply that:
Stories.

God never WAS vengeful.  How can a loving God ever be portrayed as anything but joyful, anything but loving.

If God is indeed loving,
If God is indeed joyful,

Shouldn’t he also be playful?

You’d think so.

So now the question becomes:
How exactly do you play with God?

I bet you don’t think I have the answer.

What brings you joy?
What make your heart sing?
What makes your soul dance?

Do that and that’s how you play with God.

Seeing the picture of the young boy in the pile of leaves in Jean’s Playing with God certainly leads one to believe in a playful God.  Seeing God everywhere as I do, I suppose it can’t be far off to imagine that HE is in children as well as adults who are still child like ho find themselves joyfully dancing in the rain or jumping into a pile of leaves and laughing all the while.

Maybe it’s time to tell a new story of who we think God is.
Maybe it’s time to see God in a different light.

Who wants to join me in turning the page?
Who wants to create a new story?
Who wants to see God as playful?  As joyful?

Be Happy!  Be Well!  Be Positive!
Blessings to you.

Chris

Once you realize that life is eternal,
That our souls our eternal,
That we return to light and physical over and over;

We then lose all our distress
We then lose all our fear of dying.  For there truly is no end.
